The Monster Squad Ratings & Reviews
- RyezooFebruary 15, 2025This is a frustrating movie. All the potential in the world is there. The only reason this isn't a staple to the movie going general public like Goonies or Gremlins is because these kids suck! None of them are likeable and most of their moments to shine are ruined by terrible dialogue. The atmosphere this movie creates and the awesome monsters make this still a easy watch. Even though the script is reallly weak and just bends over backwards to rush to the end.
- SpoonsOctober 31, 2024In a mash-up of classic horror and 1980s nostalgia, The Monster Squad offers a unique, family-friendly spin on monster lore, with a sense of fun that holds up well. The film follows a group of young horror enthusiasts who discover their town is threatened by none other than Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Gill-man, and the Wolfman. To stop them, these kids band together to face the fearsome lineup in a battle for their lives—and it’s every bit as entertaining as it sounds. This film stands out because it doesn’t hold back on the scares for a younger audience; it’s got just enough bite for horror newcomers, much like The Goonies meets Dracula. Despite the humor and light-hearted moments, there’s still a respect for the horror genre that gives nods to classic monster movie details without being overly goofy. The characters are distinct and relatable, from Rudy’s “bad-boy” persona to young Phoebe’s fearless charm—she might just be the heart of the group. This cast of characters is brought to life with a touch of sincerity, grounding the story in a way that makes it easy to invest in their adventure. One of the standout aspects is how each monster is reimagined yet rooted in classic lore, which would appeal to fans who enjoy lore-driven stories. There’s an obvious love for the horror genre here, and the practical effects bring the creatures to life in a way that’s fun without feeling too low-budget. The Gill-man’s costume, in particular, is memorable and creepy, and Dracula is fittingly menacing while keeping the story accessible for a younger audience. With a balance of scares, laughs, and heart, The Monster Squad offers an accessible introduction to horror for the young at heart, while still entertaining seasoned horror fans who can appreciate the respectful treatment of these iconic monsters. It’s a nostalgic, exciting ride that fans of films like Ghostbusters and The Goonies will find themselves rewatching, especially come Halloween. This film will be popular with people who like The Goonies, Ghostbusters, and other classic horror-tinged adventures.
